A symphonic jazz concert featuring the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and pianist Lara Downes, paying tribute to Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn alongside Gershwin overtures.
The Dallas Symphony Orchestra brings pianist Lara Downes to the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center for a program centered on Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn, with William Eddins conducting. The concert runs over three dates: Friday, Nov. 6, Saturday, Nov. 7, and Sunday, Nov. 8, with the Friday and Saturday shows starting at 7:30 PM and the Sunday matinee at 2 PM.
Most of the evening focuses on the thirty-year collaboration between Ellington and Strayhorn, the partnership that helped define the sound of modern jazz. The program pulls from their virtuosic writing, with A Flower is a Lovesome Thing, Strange Feeling, Night Creature, and Something to Live For all on the bill. Those are set alongside a few of Gershwin's favorite overtures, and the whole thing is played against the backdrop of the 1940s Harlem jazz scene.

It's part of the DSO's 2026/27 season, a run that goes from Bach, Verdi, and Tchaikovsky to jazz and pops, all at the Meyerson. The hall opens two hours before each concert, so there's plenty of time to get settled before the music starts. Tickets start at $38.
