The Dallas Symphony Orchestra presents Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 2 and Lutosławski's Concerto for Orchestra, conducted by Elim Chan with Aristo Sham on piano.
Elim Chan takes the podium at the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center for a three-performance run on Friday, April 9, Saturday, April 10, and Sunday, April 11, 2027. The program pairs Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 2 in G minor with Lutosławski's Concerto for Orchestra, and it's the Dallas Symphony Orchestra debut for pianist Aristo Sham.
Prokofiev's concerto is the one that puts the piano through the wringer—blazing intensity that pushes the instrument to its limits. Lutosławski's Concerto for Orchestra works in a different way, weaving Polish folk tunes into a modernist tapestry that runs from sinister opening drumbeats to a finale of electrifying joy. The two together make for a night that leans into the explosive side of the orchestra.
Sham is a name you might recognize from the 2025 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in Fort Worth, where he took home both the gold and the audience prize. Since then, he's played across five continents and put out a debut recording on Universal Music. Gramophone described his playing as "a chorus line of lightning bolts," and the Dallas Morning News noted "a nobility rarely heard from any pianist."
