The Dallas Symphony Orchestra presents Beethoven's Symphony No. 7 and Strauss' Horn Concerto No. 2, with Daniel Hawkins on horn, conducted by Fabio Luisi.
The Dallas Symphony Orchestra opens its 2026/27 Classical season at the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center with a program pairing Beethoven and Strauss. The concerts run Friday, October 16, Saturday, October 17, and Sunday, October 18, with Fabio Luisi conducting the orchestra.
On the program is Beethoven's Symphony No. 7, a piece known for its dance-like energy. Richard Wagner once described it as a work that makes "tables and benches, cans and cups, the children in the cradle fall to dancing!" alongside it, DSO Principal Horn Daniel Hawkins takes the stage for Franz Strauss' Horn Concerto No. 2. Strauss wrote the concerto as World War II unleashed storms of violence, but the music reaches back to the sunnier days of his youth and to memories of his father, who was the greatest horn virtuoso of his time. The evening also includes a surprise opening work.
These performances kick off the orchestra's full 2026/27 Classical season, which they've framed as an invitation to "really listen" in a world of constant noise. The season brings back beloved repertoire alongside jazz from Ellington, Strayhorn, and Gershwin. Before each show, Assistant Conductor Shira Samuels-Shragg gives a pre-concert talk in Horchow Hall.
