A free, family-friendly cultural festival with trick-or-treat, live concerts, line dancing, and a vendor marketplace.
The 52nd Annual Harambee Festival takes over the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center on Saturday, October 31, from 10 AM to 4 PM. It's a free, all-ages cultural celebration that doubles as a safe, family-friendly trick-or-treat alternative for the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The Citizens' Committee to Save Our Children, Inc. puts it on in partnership with the City of Dallas, Dallas Park & Recreation, and the Children's Defense Fund of Texas.
This year's theme is "Harambee! One People One Purpose," which points back to the festival's roots: Harambee is Swahili for "let's pull together." The day is built around that idea of community strength, cultural diversity, and family engagement, and the recreation center fills up with activities for every age. Watoto Village is the hub for kids and youth, with safe candy and activity stations. There's also a Pet Show & Contest, live concerts, a Line Dancing Party, a Greek Corner, a Culture Area, a Vendor Marketplace, a Food Truck Park, and a Community Voting Booth.
If you're there with kids, the Festival Adventure Passport is a good way to see everything. You collect stamps as you move through the different areas, and a completed passport enters you into a raffle for prizes like a Family Photo Package, a Pet Gift Basket, and a Dallas Fall Fun Prize Pack. It gives you a reason to wander from the music and dancing over to the marketplace and the food trucks.
