Annual self-guided tour showcasing residential water-wise landscapes with conservation techniques and native plants, featuring activities and prizes.
Dallas Water Utilities is hosting the 32nd Annual Water-Wise Landscape Tour on Saturday, October 17, with everything kicking off at the White Rock Pump Station at 2900 White Rock Rd. It's a long-running Dallas tradition—this is the 32nd year they've done it—and the whole thing is built around showing off residential yards that work with the Texas climate instead of fighting it.
The tour is self-guided, so you can take it at your own pace. You start at the pump station, pick up a map of the participating homes, and then head out to see them. The gardens you'll find are all drought-tolerant, built around native plants, drip irrigation, and rain barrels—the kind of setups that keep a yard green without running the hose all day. If you've been thinking about swapping out a thirsty lawn for something that actually belongs in North Texas, this is a good way to see how other people have handled it in their own backyards.
There's more to do at the pump station than just grabbing your map, too. They're running a drawing for a free rain barrel, and there will be arts and crafts on hand. There's an activity to make seed balls, and a trivia contest where the prizes are native plants or shrubs, so you might walk away with something for your own garden. Between the tour and the activities, it's as much a family outing as it is a look at water conservation.
