Concert featuring Thoom, a Beirut-born, NYC-based artist known for 'apocalypse pop', with support from Bassvictim.
Thoom plays Newport Music Hall on Saturday, October 24, with Bassvictim opening. It's a double bill on a Saturday night in Columbus, and if you haven't come across Thoom yet, there's a good bit of ground to cover before the show.
Thoom is a Beirut-born, NYC-based artist, singer, and producer who describes her sound as "apocalypse pop." It's a volatile hybrid that mixes Arabic and English lyrics and blends genres rather than sticking to one. That bilingual approach is a core part of what she does, and the "apocalypse pop" label gives you a sense of the mood she's working with—pop music that feels like it's coming from the end of the world, or at least playing with the idea of it.
She's built her name in the underground, and the people she's worked with tell you where she sits. She's collaborated and toured with Yves Tumor, and has received co-signs from Juliana Huxtable and Mykki Blanco—artists who operate at the more experimental, boundary-pushing end of pop and electronic music. That puts her in a specific orbit: the kind of music that's danceable but keeps you on edge, and that doesn't quite fit into a single box.
