Opera Columbus production of Giacomo Puccini's 'La fanciulla del West', performed in Italian with English captions.
Opera Columbus brings Giacomo Puccini's The Girl of the Golden West to the Southern Theatre on February 26 and 28, 2027. It's a production of La fanciulla del West, with a libretto by Guelfo Civinini and Carlo Zangarini, performed in Italian with English captions. Both shows start at 7:30 PM.
The story is set in a rough-and-tumble Gold Rush mining camp where fortunes are chased, guns are loaded, and hope is a dangerous thing. It's driven by some of Puccini's most cinematic and emotionally charged music—a score that surges with sweeping romance, tension, and raw intensity. When the mysterious Dick Johnson rides into town, Minnie dares to imagine a life beyond the barroom, but his true identity as an outlaw is revealed and Sheriff Jack Rance closes in, forcing her to choose between love and the law.
Opera Columbus has been around since 1981 and is led by General Director and CEO Julia Noulin-Mérat. They're redefining regional opera under the company slogan 'Make It Yours,' and this production fits that spirit—taking a classic Puccini work and bringing it to the Southern Theatre in downtown Columbus. If you're not familiar with the story, it's essentially a Western in opera form: a mining camp, a barroom, a mysterious stranger, and a sheriff on the trail. The Italian singing is paired with English captions, so you can follow the plot even if you don't speak the language.
