Live show by Columbus duo That's The Breaks, blending soul, rock, funk, blues and pop with originals and crowd interaction.
That's The Breaks play Fadó Irish Pub on Friday, October 30, starting at 7 PM. They're a Columbus duo, and the set is just the two of them.
If you haven't caught them before, it's worth knowing how they pull off a full sound with only two people on stage. Matt Steidle handles the melodic side of things on a hybrid extended-range guitar and bass, which lets him cover both the low end and the lead lines at once. He's also the one on vocals and the one talking to the crowd. Josh Riedy holds down the other half, laying in the grooves and filling out the sound with hand percussion. Between the two of them, they cover the bass, the guitar, the drums, and the singing.
Their repertoire pulls from a few different decades and styles. They blend classic soul and classic rock with their own originals and modern pop, so the setlist doesn't stay in one place for long. They describe their sound as drawing from blues, funk, jam, pop, R&B/soul, and rock — and that's a fair summary, since they're just as comfortable with a slow soul groove as they are with a rock tune. It's the kind of set that moves through a lot of ground in one night.
