Chamber music concert conducted by Elias Miller with works by Richard Strauss, Sam Wu and Dvořák, marking his subscription debut with the Columbus Symphony.
Elias Miller takes the podium at the Southern Theatre on Friday, January 21, 2027, for a chamber music program that marks his subscription debut with the Columbus Symphony. The symphony is led by Music Director Rossen Milanov, and this particular bill focuses on wind instruments rather than the full orchestra.
The program opens with Richard Strauss's Suite in B-flat Major for Thirteen Wind Instruments, Op. 4, a piece written long before the epic tone poems and operas that eventually defined him. It's an early work, so you're hearing a younger Strauss before he became a household name. That's paired with Dvořák's Serenade in D Minor, Op. 44, another wind-focused piece that the symphony describes as reminiscent of his Slavonic Dances and evoking the atmosphere of an old-world castle. Between those two, there's Along the Pacific Flyway by Sam Wu, a rising-star composer whose music Gramophone describes as abounding in delicate colors, wisps of sound, and sylvan textures.

It's a night of winds, so the sound will be lighter and more focused than a full symphonic evening. The Southern Theatre is a regular home for the company, and it also hosts the Columbus Symphony Chorus under chorus director Stephen Caracciolo. The concert runs from 7:30 PM to 9:30 PM at 21 East Main Street, Columbus, OH 43215.
