ProMusica Chamber Orchestra brings its Neighborhood Series to Saint Mary Catholic Church in German Village with a program of brass repertoire.
ProMusica Chamber Orchestra brings The Art of Brass to Saint Mary Catholic Church on Sunday, February 28, 2027, at 4 PM. It's part of their Neighborhood Series, which takes the orchestra out of the concert hall and into community venues across Columbus for one-hour programs. The series has stopped at Saint Mary in German Village and at Worthington United Methodist Church, and this particular program is fronted by the orchestra's own brass players.
The set is built around the brass section, and the repertoire runs from the Renaissance to the modern day. You'll hear Susato's Susato Suite and two pieces by Giovanni Gabrieli—Canzon per Sonare Primi Toni No. 1 and O Magnum Mysterium—which go back to the late 16th century. From there it moves into the 20th and 21st: Hazell's Three Brass Cats, Whitacre's Alleluia, Premru's Divertimento, and Sousa's Invincible Eagle. It's a wide spread, with the older Venetian works sitting alongside contemporary pieces and a Sousa march.
ProMusica describes the program as one where their brass players lean into the bold sonorities, rich textures, and triumphant brilliance of the repertoire. That's a fair way to put it—brass is the one section of an orchestra that can fill a room on its own, and this is a set designed to let it do exactly that. The Neighborhood Series is built on taking the music into the community rather than asking everyone to come to a single hall, so this one lands in German Village.
