ProMusica Chamber Orchestra, led by David Danzmayr, plays Clarice Assad's 'Suite for Lower Strings' and 'PLAY!' alongside Schubert's Symphony No. 3.
ProMusica brings back Brazilian-American composer Clarice Assad to the Southern Theatre on Saturday, December 12, and Sunday, December 13, 2026. Both nights start at 7 PM, with doors opening at 6 PM. Assad is returning as part of ProMusica's Composer/Performer Project, and she's taking on two roles: she'll be on stage as a vocalist and as the composer of the new material.
The program opens with two of her works, Suite for Lower Strings and PLAY!, and then shifts to Schubert's Symphony No. 3. To round things out, they've added Lumbye's Champagne Gallop. The whole thing runs about an hour and a half with an intermission, and it's followed by 'Coda: Post-Concert Conversation,' where you can stick around after the music stops to hear more about what you just heard.
Assad won't be alone up there. She's joined by Third Coast Percussion and the ProMusica Chamber Orchestra, which is led by music director David Danzmayr. The orchestra itself is a bit of a traveling act: 37 musicians from across the country, with violinist Vadim Gluzman as creative partner. ProMusica describes its mission as honoring classical traditions while championing the contemporary through new works, commissions, and premieres—and this program, pairing a living composer's new pieces with Schubert, fits that description pretty closely. The ensemble is funded in part by the Greater Columbus Arts Council, The Columbus Foundation, the Ohio Arts Council, The Reinberger Foundation, and the ProMusica Sustaining Board.

One past concertgoer called an evening with them 'very special from start to finish, one of my favourites to attend.' If you're in the mood for a night that puts a contemporary composer and a classical staple on the same bill, these are the dates: Saturday, December 12, and Sunday, December 13, 7 PM at the Southern Theatre, with doors open at 6 PM.
