Annual North Star Concert headlined by Columbus jazz composer and drummer Dr. Mark Lomax II and his band at the historic Lincoln Theatre.
Dr. Mark Lomax II headlines the Lincoln Theatre on Friday, November 13, as part of the North Star Concert. It's the Lincoln Theatre Association's annual signature event, which they describe as a celebration of artistic excellence and a platform for amplifying Black voices, culture, and artistic expression within the Columbus community.
Lomax is a Columbus-based composer, drummer, recording artist, activist, author, and educator. His work draws from jazz, gospel, classical music, and the Black musical tradition. He's been a musician his whole life, touring with the Delfeayo Marsalis Sextet and collaborating with names like Clark Terry, Ellis Marsalis, Billy Harper, Bennie Maupin, and Azar Lawrence. In 2019, he released 400: An Afrikan Epic, an ambitious 12-album musical cycle exploring the history, resilience, and future of the Afrikan diaspora. He also holds a Doctor of Musical Arts in classical composition and music theory from The Ohio State University.
For this performance, he's joined by band members Dean Hulett, Dr. William Menefield, and Edwin Bayard. The venue itself is a landmark of African American and jazz history: first opened in 1928, it reopened in May 2009 following a $13.5 million renovation as a multi-use performing arts and education center.
