A contemporary dance piece by Whirlwind Dance Company that explores perspective, perception and the tension between what is directly in front of us and what exists just beyond our view.
Whirlwind Dance Company brings Nearsited to The Lincoln Theatre on Sunday, October 25, as part of the CAPA Presents season. It's a new evening-length work, so you'll be seeing it as a full-length production rather than a shorter piece tucked into a mixed bill.
The title points to exactly what the piece is about: perspective and perception. Whirlwind describes it as an exploration of the tension between what's directly in front of us and what exists just beyond our view. They took their cue from the unseen side of the moon and the duality of near and far, and the choreography follows that lead, shifting between intimate, grounded movement and expansive, cosmic imagery. The whole thing asks what becomes visible when you change your point of view, and the company describes the result as bold, mysterious and visually immersive.
It's also worth noting where this is happening. The Lincoln Theatre is a landmark of African-American and jazz history in Columbus, and it's got a story that runs as deep as the stage. It opened in 1928 as the Ogden Theatre and Ballroom, built by African-American entrepreneurs James Albert 'Al' Jackson and James 'Ernie' Williams. The Egyptian Revival dΓ©cor was modeled after the Temple of Karnak, and the stage saw a three-year-old Sammy Davis Jr. make his debut. After closing in the 1970s and nearly being torn down in 1991, it was saved and reopened in May 2009 as the city's only urban performing arts and education center. That's the space Nearsited will be filling.
