ProMusica opens its 48th season with Mozart's Mass in C Minor, performed with the Columbus Choral Artists and four vocal soloists, alongside other classical works.
ProMusica opens its 48th season at the Southern Theatre on Saturday, October 17, with two performances—the second on Sunday, October 18. Both start at 7 PM, with doors opening at 6 PM. The program runs about an hour and 40 minutes, including intermission.
It's a three-piece set that moves from the light to the heavy. It opens with Mozart's Divertimento, a bright, social kind of music, then shifts to Max Richter's On the Nature of Daylight, a contemporary piece known for its slow, aching pull. The night builds to the Mass in C Minor, which takes up the bulk of the evening and brings the full force of the ensemble to bear.
That Mass is where the stage gets crowded. ProMusica is a chamber orchestra of 37 musicians drawn from across the country, and for this piece they're joined by the Columbus Choral Artists and the Capital University Chapel Choir. There are four vocal soloists as well: sopranos Yulia Van Doren and Abigail Nims, tenor Steven Soph, and baritone Kevin Deas. Guest conductor Nicholas McGegan is stepping in for music director David Danzmayr to lead the ensemble through it.

ProMusica is led by Danzmayr and creative partner violinist Vadim Gluzman, and they describe their approach as blending classical traditions with the contemporary, which is exactly what this program does by pairing Mozart and Richter in one sitting. They also commission new works throughout the season.
On the practical side, there's no dress code, so you can come as you are. The lobby bar lets you take refreshments to your seat, and there's a post-concert conversation called 'Coda' offered afterward if you want to stick around and talk through what you just heard. Both shows are at 7 PM, doors open at 6 PM.
