Live folk concert by New York singer-songwriter Lucy Kaplansky at Natalie's Grandview on King Avenue.
Lucy Kaplansky plays Natalie's Grandview (Music Hall & Kitchen) on Thursday, October 29, starting at 8 PM. She's a New York-based folk singer with a long history in the scene, and this is a solo bill—just her on stage.
Kaplansky's path to this show is a bit of a story. Born in Chicago, she moved to New York at 18 and found her way into the Greenwich Village folk scene. In 1983, she decided to become a psychologist and enrolled at Yeshiva University, and she kept playing music while she worked toward her PhD. Along the way, she found success as a duo with Shawn Colvin, but she still chose to set up a private practice and work as a staff psychologist at a New York hospital. By the early 1990s, she returned to music full-time.
Her solo records came through Red House Records, starting with The Tide in 1994 and Flesh and Bone in 1996. In 1998, she formed the folk group Cry Cry Cry with Dar Williams and Richard Shindell. Her albums Ten Year Night (1999) and Every Single Day (2001) both won AFIM awards for Best Pop Album of the year. This past January, she released The Lucy Story, a retrospective made up mostly of unreleased tracks.
