The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup final, in which Columbus Crew tries to win its first Open Cup trophy since 2002 against St. Louis CITY SC.
Columbus Crew take on St. Louis CITY SC at ScottsMiracle-Gro Field on Wednesday, October 21, for the final of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. It's a home game for the Crew, and the stakes are high: they're playing for their first Open Cup trophy in 24 years.
If you're not familiar with the tournament, it's the oldest ongoing soccer competition in the U.S., running since 1913. It's named for Lamar Hunt, the Crew's founder and a legendary sports executive who also started MLS, the American Football League, and the Kansas City Chiefs. It's modeled on yearlong European cups like England's FA Cup or Spain's Copa del Rey, pitting teams from MLS clubs all the way down to amateurs. This is the tournament's 111th edition.
The Crew are three-time MLS Cup winners, but they've only won the Open Cup once, back in 2002 at Historic Crew Stadium. This is their shot at a second title and their tenth major trophy overall. Leading the line is striker Josef MartΓnez, who won the cup in 2019 with Atlanta United and is the league's sixth all-time leading scorer; this is his sixth final as an MLS player. St. Louis CITY SC made it here after beating the Colorado Rapids 3-0 in the semifinal, and they're chasing their first piece of hardware. They're led by first-year manager Yoann Damet and are riding a record 21-match unbeaten streak.
