Hands-on class with instructor Nicole Tabit to make kokedama, Japanese moss-wrapped plants, where attendees take home two kokedama and two houseplants.
Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens is hosting a kokedama workshop on Tuesday, November 3, from 6 PM to 7:30 PM in Meeting Room A. If you've never heard the term, kokedama is a Japanese way of displaying a plant wrapped in a ball of moss instead of a pot. The name comes from koke, meaning moss, and dama, meaning ball. It draws on the styles of bonsai and nerai, which literally translates to "no pot."
It's a hands-on class, and you'll be working with two kinds of slow-growing, easy-to-care-for tropical houseplants. By the time you're done, you'll walk away with two kokedama and two new houseplants to take home. Since they're slow-growing and easy to look after, they're a good entry point if you're not used to keeping plants alive.
Leading the session is Nicole Tabit, the Adult Program Manager at the Conservatory. She holds a degree in Natural Resource Management and Visitors Services from The Ohio State University, so she knows her way around the technical side of things. She'll be guiding you through the process of wrapping the plants in moss and getting them set up.
