One-day dance convention with workshops in jazz, tap, contemporary, hip hop and musical theater, a showcase and Pro:tégé performer auditions.
Kids Artistic Revue is bringing its dance convention to the Greater Columbus Convention Center on Sunday, October 25, from 8 AM to 5 PM. KAR bills itself as "America's Favorite Dance Competition & Convention," and this is a one-day event that pairs studio training with commercial dance and industry expertise. It's built for dancers who want to get out of their usual studio routine and spend a full day in a room with other dancers from across the region.
The bulk of the day is made up of classes in Jazz, Tap, Contemporary, Hip Hop, and Musical Theater, all taught by KAR's faculty of educators and industry professionals. The faculty includes more than 20 instructors, with Alex Kessinger leading Jazz, Tyne Stecklein on Contemporary, and Nancy O'Meara, the Pro:tégé Director, also on the roster. You can move between styles throughout the day, so if you're a tap dancer who's always wanted to try contemporary, this is a good place to do it without having to commit to a full term at a new studio.
Beyond the workshops, there's a free Convention Showcase that runs about an hour. It includes faculty introductions, performances from the classes, and the announcement of a Pro:tégé scholarship. After that, dancers audition in age groups for the title of Pro:tégé Performer, and the winners are eligible to become Elite Pro:tégés. It's a competitive side to the day, but it's optional—you can just come for the classes and skip the audition if that's more your speed.

KAR describes itself as a family, and a lot of that community happens around events like this. They also run an invite-only Dance Competition Educators Summit for studio owners and dance educators, so if you're a teacher, you might find yourself rubbing elbows with other studio owners from around the area. It's a one-day affair at the Greater Columbus Convention Center, running from 8 AM to 5 PM on Sunday, October 25.
