Pops concert by the Columbus Symphony with full orchestrations of pop classics, including a Michael Jackson tribute, with guest artists Capathia Jenkins and Ryan Shaw.
The Columbus Symphony is bringing ICON: The Voices That Changed Music to the Davidson Theatre at the Riffe Center Theatre Complex on January 8 and 9, 2027. It's a pops program built around a Michael Jackson tribute, with full orchestrations of songs that shaped popular music.
On stage, singers Capathia Jenkins and Ryan Shaw take the lead, with the symphony providing the full orchestral backing. The setlist reaches across several decades of pop and soul: Michael Jackson is the center, but the program also pulls from Prince, Whitney Houston, Gladys Knight, Elvis Presley, Diana Ross, and Stevie Wonder. Principal Pops Conductor Stuart Chafetz leads the orchestra through the arrangements.
It's part of the symphony's 75th season. The Columbus Symphony is the only full-time professional orchestra serving the Central Ohio community, and its repertoire runs from the Cardinal Health Masterworks series to an indoor pops series and a new innovative series. The organization is perhaps best known for the Nationwide Picnic with the Pops program that fills the summer. Rossen Milanov serves as the orchestra's Music Director, and the chorus is led by director Stephen Caracciolo.
