Indie-pop quintet Hot Freaks, from Minneapolis, play Ace of Cups on North High Street.
Hot Freaks are playing Ace of Cups on Tuesday, October 20, at 6 PM. It's a stop on their reunion tour, and the lineup is just them.
If you haven't come across them before, Hot Freaks are a Minneapolis quintet. They first made a name for themselves with their 2013 self-titled debut, ten tracks of indie pop with a disco sheen that drew comparisons to Voxtrot and MGMT. The band didn't stay together long after that: frontman Leo Vondracek and guitarist Darin Dahlmeier split in 2015, though the members stayed close in the years that followed.
What brought them back was a single. In 2024, "PUPPY PRINCESS" went viral on TikTok, and that momentum sparked this reunion tour. Along with the live dates, they re-released "PAYCHECK 2 PAYCHECK," a b-side from the 2013 record, and paired it with a roller-rink themed music video. So the set will likely pull from both ends of their history: the early indie pop that first put them on the map and the newer material that's brought them back together.
