Public working rehearsal of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, with coffee and donuts included, featuring Respighi, Ravel, Falla and Debussy.
The Columbus Symphony Orchestra is open for a working rehearsal at the Ohio Theatre on Friday, April 9, 2027, from 10 AM to 12:30 PM. It's part of the Friday Coffee Dress series, which lets you sit in on a rehearsal rather than a formal concert, and the ticket includes free coffee and donuts. Doors open at 9 AM, so you can get your caffeine and a seat before the music starts.
Conductor Rossen Milanov leads the orchestra, and Venezuelan pianist Gabriela Martinez joins in for the piano concertos. The program is built around a collection of musical postcards from Italy, Spain, and France. It opens with Respighi's Le fontane di Roma, a tone poem that takes you on a day-long tour of Rome's fountains, from the Fountain of Valle Giulia at dawn to the Villa Medici Fountain at sunset. Martinez then takes over for Ravel's Piano Concerto in G Major, a jazzy piece inspired by Basque folk music, followed by Falla's Nights in the Gardens of Spain. Debussy's La mer closes the morning, with its sketches of wind, waves, and the power of the sea. The symphony performs on Steinway pianos provided by Graves Piano.

Martinez comes to the stage with a reputation for being "elegant and incisive," as The New York Times put it. The whole morning is part of the CH Masterworks 26/27 series, and because it's a working rehearsal, you're seeing the music as it's being put together rather than a polished final performance. Tickets range from $0 to $25, and the coffee and donuts are included in the price.
