Cooking class with instructor Joey Jaros, who teaches safe foraging and uses acorn flour and native plants from Columbus to bake three holiday cookies.
Joey Jaros is leading a baking class at Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens on Thursday, December 18, from 6 PM to 8 PM. It's a holiday cookie workshop with a foraging twist: instead of just pulling ingredients from a pantry, you'll be working with native plants gathered right here around Columbus.
Jaros starts with the basics of foraging safely, so you'll know what you're looking for before you start cooking. From there, the class gets hands-on: you'll make your own acorn flour from scratch, and that flour becomes the base for three different cookies. There's a dark chocolate and acorn florentine, a persimmon crinkle cookie, and a spicebush gingerbread—all using plants native to the region. Everyone samples each one during the class, and you get to take home three prepared doughs to bake whenever you like.

It's a good way to see what's growing in the city during the winter months, and you walk away with something you can actually eat. The class runs from 6 PM to 8 PM at the Conservatory, and tickets are $70, or $65 for members.
