Pianist Bolai Cao presents a recital of Schumann's Sonata No. 2, Beethoven's 'Les Adieux' and Ravel's 'Miroirs' in the Faculty/Guest Recital Series.
Bolai Cao brings a piano recital to Timashev Recital Hall on Monday, October 26, from 7:30 to 9:00 PM. It's part of the Faculty/Guest Recital Series, and the program moves from the high-drama Romanticism of the first half into the shimmering French impressionism of the second.
The first half pairs Robert Schumann's Sonata No. 2 in G Minor, Op. 22 with Ludwig van Beethoven's Sonata in E-flat Major, Op. 81a, known as Les Adieux. Schumann's sonata is driven by the marking So rasch wie möglich—as fast as possible—and its final ringing G pivots directly into the opening horn-call of Beethoven's Les Adieux. That sonata follows a programmatic narrative of farewell, solitary absence, and exuberant reunion.
The second half is devoted to Maurice Ravel's Miroirs, a five-movement suite that trades linear storytelling for acoustic color and optical reflection. It brings together Noctuelles, Oiseaux tristes, Une barque sur l'océan, Alborada del gracioso, and La vallée des cloches.
