Medieval music concert by the ensemble Sequentia, with Benjamin Bagby on voice and Anglo-Saxon harp and Norbert Rodenkirchen on medieval flutes, in the Early Music in Columbus series.
Sequentia is coming to Trinity Episcopal Church on Friday, October 23, as part of the 47th season of Early Music in Columbus. The concert is presented by The Friends of Early Music, a 501(c)3 non-profit that stages historically informed performances on period instruments, with the goal of recreating the sound composers heard when they wrote their works.
On stage will be Benjamin Bagby on voice and Anglo-Saxon harp, and Norbert Rodenkirchen on medieval flutes. The program follows the trials, tribulations, and wonder of the medieval traveler, with Bagby acting as a medieval bard. He's well known for his performance of the epic poem Beowulf, and that storytelling side of him is what carries the evening.
Sequentia is one of the most respected ensembles for medieval music in the worldโan international group of singers and instrumentalists based in Paris under Bagby's direction, dedicated to music from before 1300. Bagby co-founded the ensemble in 1977 with the late Barbara Thornton; he was named REMA Artist of the Year in 2017 and now teaches at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen. Rodenkirchen has been Sequentia's flutist since 1996 and also composes and performs with the ensemble Dialogos.
