Free screening of the documentary 'Columbus Backstage: Melodies & Moments', which celebrates the history of the Lincoln Theatre and its Backstage performances.
The Lincoln Theatre is screening Columbus Backstage: Melodies & Moments on Thursday, November 12, at 6 PM. The documentary was directed and edited by David Maurice Bailey and produced by Bailey and John Ray, a Basement Deep Media Group project with Ful-Ray Productions.
The film centers on the Lincoln Theatre's history as a Columbus cultural landmark, looking at its legacy and the impact it's had on the community. A good part of that comes from the Backstage performances, which have brought legendary artists and emerging talent to audiences for generations. The Lincoln Theatre Association acts as the landmark's steward, as an incubator for emerging local artists, as a presenter of artists from around the world, and as a creative partner in the revitalization of the King-Lincoln District and downtown Columbus.
What makes the film more than just a look at the stage is how it reaches beyond it. It pulls in the history of the Near East Side, including East Long Street and Mount Vernon Avenue, and ties music and community to the pressures of redlining, desegregation, urban renewal, and freeway construction. It's as much about the neighborhood around the theatre as it is about what happened inside it.
