A chess workshop exploring the history, culture and rules of the game, held at the Columbus Metropolitan Library Barnett Branch.
Chess for Wisdom and Wellness comes to the Barnett Branch of the Columbus Metropolitan Library on Thursday, October 22, from 4:30 PM to 6:00 PM. It's a workshop organized by the Royal Oak Initiative, and it's built around chess as a starting point rather than just a game you play. If you've never touched a board, this is a good place to begin; if you already know your way around the pieces, there's still plenty here that goes beyond the board.
The session treats chess as a gateway to its own history, culture, and rules. The organizers describe it as an ancient game—more than 1,500 years old—that's played all over the world, and they use that global reach to open up a wider conversation. You'll get the rules of the game, but you'll also get the context around it, the way it's evolved over centuries, and the different cultures it's touched along the way. It's a workshop that looks at the game from the inside out, so you walk away with both the how and the why.
