Grammy Award-winning male chorus Chanticleer celebrates America's 250th anniversary with spirituals, gospel, barbershop, bluegrass and vocal jazz.
Chanticleer is coming to the Southern Theatre on Saturday, April 24, 2027, at 7 PM. They're a Grammy Award-winning male chorus, and The New Yorker has called them "the world's reigning male chorus." Their whole thing is bringing great choral works from the past and present to life with professional singers, and this particular program is built around America's 250th anniversary.
Over the course of the evening, they'll trace the country's vocal traditions through a wide range of styles. You'll hear African American spirituals and gospel, barbershop, bluegrass, and vocal jazzโall within one set. It's a broad sweep of American singing, from the church and the community hall to the jazz club.
The centerpiece of the night is a new commission by composer Trevor Weston. His piece looks at the connections between traditional hymns and Black spiritual traditions, and it's meant to turn the concert into a reflection on the voices that have shaped the country's shared musical heritage. That's the thread that ties the rest of the program together, too.
