Senior dress rehearsal of BalletMet's 'Marilyn', a ballet exploring the life of Marilyn Monroe through movement, performed at The Davidson Theatre.
BalletMet is bringing MARILYN to The Davidson Theatre downtown, with the senior dress rehearsal happening Friday, October 16, at 11 AM. It's a co-production between BalletMet, Tulsa Ballet, and Oregon Ballet Theatre, with a score by Shannon Rugani and choreography by Dani Rowe. The ballet tells Marilyn Monroe's story through movement rather than singing or acting, looking at both the glamour of her fame and the woman behind the icon.
Rowe went deep into the research for this one. She gave the cast books and videos to study, and she even wrote a poem about Monroe to include in the work. BalletMet Academy students portray Monroe's childhood, while dancers Grace-Ann Powers and Sophie Miklosovic play her at the height of her popularity. Miklosovic joined BalletMet's professional company at 17 and has taken on some of the big roles in the repertoire: Mimi in La Boheme, Juliet in Romeo and Juliet, Odette and Odile in Swan Lake, and Cinderella and the Sugar Plum Fairy in The Nutcracker. She's said that portraying a real person like Monroe is the most challenging thing she's ever done.
