A live jazz performance by pianist and composer Yvonne Rogers as part of the A Tribe for Jazz series at the Columbus Museum of Art.
Yvonne Rogers plays solo at the Columbus Museum of Art on Sunday, October 18, as part of the A Tribe for Jazz series. She's a pianist and composer from coastal Maine, now based in Brooklyn, and this is a solo set—just her and the piano.
Rogers describes her work as rooted in improvisation and play, with an organic approach to rhythm and harmony she traces back to her rural upbringing. That background comes through in the way she handles the piano: it's less about following a strict script and more about where the music wants to go in the moment. She's as active as a bandleader as she is a sideman, and the names she's played with run through some of the most respected corners of the jazz world—Adam O'Farrill, Ingrid Laubrock, John Hollenbeck, Tomeka Reid, Ralph Alessi, and Harish Raghavan. Those dates have taken her to stages like the NYC Winter Jazz Fest and the North Sea Jazz Festival, and she keeps a bi-monthly residency going at Close Up in New York.
On the recording side, she's put out two albums. Her debut, Seeds, came out in 2023, and her solo record, The Button Jar, followed on Pyroclastic Records, produced by Kris Davis. The solo format of this show puts her in the same territory as The Button Jar, so it's a good chance to hear that particular side of her writing. She's also picked up a few awards along the way: the Roulette Awarded Artists Commission, the Next Jazz Legacy Award, and the Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composers Award.
