The Charlotte Symphony Youth Orchestras perform their spring concert with an eclectic mix of orchestral favorites at the Belk Theater.
The Charlotte Symphony Youth Orchestras take the stage at the Belk Theater on Saturday, March 13, 2027, for their spring concert. It's a matinee, starting at 2 PM, and the program is an eclectic mix of orchestral favorites—the kind of afternoon that works just as well if you're bringing the kids as if you're coming on your own.
If you aren't familiar with how the youth orchestras are set up, it's a tiered system that lets students move up as they grow. The Youth Symphony is the most advanced, made up mostly of high school students. Below that is the Youth Camerata, where middle and high schoolers build their performance skills. Then there's the Youth Philharmonic for intermediate players, and the Youth Ensemble, a newer training group designed to bridge the gap between early music education and the intermediate and advanced orchestras. All of them are open to students regardless of their financial resources, and they're led by a professional conducting staff.
The venue is the Belk Theater, at 130 North Tryon Street, part of the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center. The building was designed by architect Cesar Pelli and opened in 1992, and the theater itself is set up in a contemporary European horseshoe arrangement. It's known for world-class acoustics, and the audience chamber is lit by about 2,400 fiber-optic 'points of light.' The Center's name honors the people of North Carolina and the Blumenthal Foundation, the largest private donor to its capital campaign.
