The Charlotte Symphony Orchestra presents Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 6 'Pathétique' alongside a world premiere of 'Good Trouble' by Levi Taylor and Beethoven's Fourth Piano Concerto, with pianist Anne-Marie McDermott.
The Charlotte Symphony is bringing Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 6 'Pathétique' to the Belk Theater on Friday, January 15 and Saturday, January 16, 2027, with both performances starting at 7:30 PM. Music Director Kwamé Ryan leads the orchestra, and pianist Anne-Marie McDermott joins them on stage.
The program pairs the Tchaikovsky with a world premiere: Good Trouble by Emmy-nominated composer Levi Taylor, the symphony's 2026-27 Spotlight Artist. The piece was commissioned for the United States's 250th anniversary and takes its name from the words of civil rights leader John Lewis, whose call to make "good trouble" is the core of the work. Taylor blends orchestral and electronic influences to look at identity, history, and the human experience. Beethoven's Fourth Piano Concerto rounds out the bill.
Pathétique is a heavy one. Tchaikovsky said the symphony contained his "whole soul," and it trades triumph for a final movement that dissolves into silence. It's a long way from the celebratory mood of Good Trouble, but that's the point of the pairing—the new work sits right alongside the old.
