The Charlotte Symphony Youth Orchestras perform their fall concert under the direction of Hunter Kopczynski, Erica Hefner and Katie Ebert, featuring works by Beethoven, Coleridge-Taylor and Soon Hee Newbold.
The Charlotte Symphony Youth Orchestras bring their fall concert to Knight Theater on Sunday, Oct 25, at 7 PM. It's a big night that puts three of their ensembles on one stage, each led by a different conductor.
The Youth Symphony, the most advanced group and mostly high school students, is conducted by Hunter Kopczynski. They'll be playing works by Beethoven, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor and Soon Hee Newbold. The Youth Camerata, made up of middle and high school students building their performance skills, is led by Erica Hefner. Their set features Dvoลรกk's New World Symphony, Clare Grundman's Second American Folk Rhapsody and Robert Sheldon's Appalachian Morning. And the Youth Philharmonic, for intermediate students, is under Katie Ebert, with music celebrating America's 250th anniversary.
If you're not familiar with how the program works, these orchestras are tiered by level. The Youth Symphony is the top group, followed by the Youth Camerata and the Youth Philharmonic. There's also a Youth Ensemble, a training group designed to bridge early music education with the intermediate and advanced orchestras. All the ensembles are open to students regardless of their financial resources, and the conducting staff is professional. The program is built around music education for students pursuing musical excellence, with a focus on character, discipline, commitment and community.
