Tree adoption event for Mecklenburg County residents in specific zip codes to receive trees, with a required planting demonstration.
TreesCharlotte is holding a tree adoption event at 701 Tuckaseegee Road in Charlotte on Saturday, February 27, 2027, from 8:30 AM to 11:00 AM. It's open to Mecklenburg County residents in specific zip codes, so check that your neighborhood qualifies before you head out. The nonprofit relies on donations to give these trees away, and this is one of several adoptions they run across the county—they also hold them in South Charlotte, Mint Hill, Matthews, and Pineville, with an End of Season adoption later on.
They'll have a mix of species on hand, from small flowering trees to canopy-builders and evergreen screening, so you can pick something that actually fits your yard. There's a couple of rules to keep in mind: registration is required, and each registration is limited to two trees maximum. Everyone who comes through also has to go through a planting demonstration, so you'll leave knowing how to get your new tree in the ground properly. One thing to be clear on—reselling the trees or using them for profit is prohibited, and doing so will get you banned from future TreesCharlotte events.
If you're looking for more than just a free tree, the organization does a fair amount of other work around the city. They run TreeMaster and TreeKeeper classroom courses, and their own arborist leads tree walks. They also do tree-inventory mapping of street-view trees in neighborhoods like the Historic Hoskins area, and they host Between Two Oaks, a virtual summer speaking series led by urban forest educator and arborist Heather Brent. It's a good way to get a better sense of what's growing in the city and how to take care of it.
