Concert by Thundercat, a virtuoso bassist and composer known for funk, soul and electronic beats, with TiaCorine.
Thundercat plays The Fillmore Charlotte on Thursday, October 15, with TiaCorine opening the bill. If you're not familiar with the name, Thundercat is the stage name of Stephen Bruner, a Los Angeles bassist, singer, and composer who's spent the last decade working across a few different worlds at once. He's a multi-GRAMMY winner with four solo albums to his name, and he's known as much for the records he puts out as for the ones he helps other people make.
That second part is a good place to start if you've heard his name but haven't dove into his catalog. He's a frequent collaborator with Kendrick Lamar, Tame Impala, HAIM, Childish Gambino, Flying Lotus, and Kamasi Washington. If any of those names ring a bell, you've likely already heard his bass lines—deep, melodic, and often doing a lot of the heavy lifting in the background. His solo work brings those same instincts to the front, blending electronic beats, jazz fusion, R&B, and funk into something that's hard to pin to a single genre. It's music that can be as danceable as it is technical.
