A family-friendly stage musical adaptation of the animated series, where Spongebob and friends must save Bikini Bottom from a volcano.
The Spongebob Musical comes to the Booth Playhouse at Blumenthal Arts Center on Friday, October 23, and Saturday, October 24. It's a stage adaptation of the animated series created by Stephen Hillenburg, presented by Queen City Concerts. The story follows Spongebob and his friends as they try to save Bikini Bottom from a volcano that threatens to destroy their home. It's billed as a timeless story for the believer in all of us, and it's built for the entire family.
The music is where the show really opens up. The book is by Kyle Jarrow, and the songs come from a wide range of artists: Yolanda Adams, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, Sara Bareilles, Cyndi Lauper, John Legend, Panic! At the Disco, They Might Be Giants, and T.I. Those sit alongside songs by David Bowie, Tom Kenny, and Andy Paley. It's a mix of pop, rock, and R&B that pulls from a lot of different places, so the soundtrack changes as the show goes on.
