Volunteers help repair broken items brought by attendees, promoting the right to repair and reducing waste.
Repair Café is back at the Innovation Barn on Saturday, October 24, from 10 AM to 2 PM. It's a free event, and you bring whatever broken things you've been meaning to fix—small appliances, lamps, jewelry, fans, clocks, toys, electronics, bicycles, furniture, and clothing. Volunteers with the right tools and skills help you get them working again, and you can learn how to do it yourself as you go. It's a community effort to keep stuff out of the landfill, built around the 'right to repair' idea.
This is part of a global movement that started in Amsterdam in 2009; there are more than 3,000 Repair Cafés worldwide now. Charlotte's first one happened on February 17, 2024, and the local version is run by Envision Charlotte at the Innovation Barn. The Barn is also home to Circular Charlotte, a joint project with the City of Charlotte to move the city toward a circular economy. It's a busy spot—the Barn also houses an aquaponics lab, a mushroom lab, and black soldier fly production.

Just a couple of things to keep in mind before you head over: volunteers won't work on dangerous or hazardous items, and the coaches aren't specialists for highly specialized repairs. If you've got something that fits the bill, bring it along. It's free to attend, and the next one after this is December 12, also 10 AM to 2 PM at the Innovation Barn, 932 Seigle Avenue, Charlotte, NC 28205.
