Indian classical music maestro Niladri Kumaar performs his sitar and zitar compositions on a specially curated tour, honouring his collaboration with Zakir Hussain.
Niladri Kumaar brings The Space Between the Notes to the Booth Playhouse at Blumenthal Arts Center on Sunday, October 25, at 7 PM. It's a concert of Indian classical music presented by Blumenthal Arts and the Indian Performing Arts Association of Charlotte.
The show takes its name from a recording of a live concert Kumaar gave in Mumbai with the late Zakir Hussain. That record was released later that year and remains their only recorded performance together. For this 2026-2027 tour, Kumaar is bringing that material back to the stage, playing it on sitar and zitar with an ensemble of Indian and American musicians. He describes the approach as weaving his own style with centuries-old tradition and creative innovation.
Kumaar is a sitar maestro known as a maverick musician and composer, a celebrated ambassador and an Indian music icon, and one of the most sought-after exponents of Indian classical music of his generation. He collaborated frequently with Zakir Hussain, and their sitar-tabla duo became one of the most popular and prominent of its kind. On this tour, he's joined by Agnelo Fernandes on keys, Sambit Chatterjee on drums, and Satyajit Talwalkar on tabla.
