Bluegrass concert by Mountain Grass Unit at The Underground in Charlotte, blending tradition with jam-band freedom.
Mountain Grass Unit play The Underground on Friday, November 6, as part of the tour for their debut studio album, Appalachian Smoke. They're a three-piece from Birmingham, Alabama: Drury Anderson on mandolin and vocals, Luke Black on acoustic guitar and banjo, and Sam Wilson on upright bass.
They describe their sound as tradition-minded bluegrass mixed with jam-band freedom, stacked harmonies and melody-first songwriting. The sets run from their own originals to covers that pull from country, jazz, funk, rock and even metal, with names like Tony Rice, the Grateful Dead, Jerry Reed, the Rolling Stones and the Osborne Brothers in the mix. They're coming off a strong run, too: they won IBMA Momentum Band of the Year and sold out more than 30 shows in 2025.
Appalachian Smoke is the record they're touring, so you'll hear the new material alongside the covers they've built their live sets around. Between the three of them, they cover the mandolin, guitar, banjo and upright bass, and the vocal harmonies are a big part of what they do. If you're into bluegrass that doesn't stay strictly within the lines, this is exactly that kind of show.
