A concert by the Charlotte Symphony exploring the lives and works of the Mendelssohn siblings, Fanny and Felix, conducted by Christopher James Lees.
Christopher James Lees takes the stage at the Booth Playhouse on February 12, 2027, for Mendelssohn 360, a concert that puts the audience around the orchestra rather than in front of it. It's part of the Charlotte Symphony 360 series, and Lees pulls double duty as both conductor and pianist.
The whole evening centers on the Mendelssohn siblings, Fanny and Felix. Most people know Felix, but Fanny was a composer in her own right, and this program puts them side by side. Lees traces their shared creativity, the diverging paths their lives took, and the lasting impact they both left. He pairs Fanny's Overture in C Major with a guided tour through Felix's Italian Symphony, so you get to hear her work and a deep dive into his.
It's a good way to hear the two together, especially with the 360 setup. Instead of the usual stage-and-seats arrangement, the orchestra is in the middle of the room, which changes how you experience the sound. Lees will be leading from the center, conducting and playing piano throughout.
