Grammy Award-winning pianist Michelle Cann performs Gershwin's Concerto in F with the Charlotte Symphony, alongside works by Julia Adolphe and Samuel Barber.
Michelle Cann returns to the Belk Theater on Friday, March 12, and Saturday, March 13, 2027, for two performances of Gershwin's Concerto in F with the Charlotte Symphony. The Grammy Award-winning pianist takes the lead on the Gershwin, a jazz-infused work that draws on Charleston rhythms and blues influences, blending jazz and orchestral writing in a way that captures the youthful optimism of a nation finding its musical voice. Daniela Candillari conducts the symphony for both nights.
The program doesn't stop with Gershwin. You'll also hear Julia Adolphe's Underneath the Sheen, a piece with shimmering textures that evoke beams of sunlight filtering through California's redwood forests. The evening rounds out with Samuel Barber's Symphony No. 1, known for its lyricism, drama, and vivid orchestration. Between the three, it's a broad spread—Gershwin's jazz-inflected energy, Adolphe's atmospheric textures, and Barber's dramatic symphonic writing.
If you're coming early, there's a pre-concert talk at 6:30 PM in the Mezzanine Lobby. It's a good chance to get some context on the program before the music starts. The Belk Theater itself is part of the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center, designed by architect Cesar Pelli and opened in 1992; about 2,400 points of light in the audience chamber form a multicolored fiber-optic network.
