A hands-on craft programme inspired by Hispanic folk art traditions, designed for children aged 5 to 12 as part of the Hispanic Heritage Month celebration.
Craft 'n' Culture: Hispanic Heritage Month is at Steele Creek Library on Wednesday, October 7, from 6 PM to 7 PM. It's a free craft session for kids ages 5 to 12, and it's part of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library's monthlong celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from September 15 to October 15.
The library is filling that window with free activities to honor the cultures of Hispanic and Latino Americans and their contributions to the United States. This particular class frames folk art as a multicultural learning experience, where participants turn everyday items into one-of-a-kind masterpieces. It's a hands-on session, so the kids will be making something rather than just watching.
If you're looking for more, this is just one of several programs the library has lined up for the month. There's a teen scavenger hunt featuring Hispanic flags and a teen hangout with build-your-own nachos, along with other craft sessions inspired by specific traditions: the yarn painting of the Huichol people, the folk art of Salvadoran artist Fernando Llort, and Mexican folk art. This one is geared toward the 5-to-12 crowd, so it's a good fit if you've got younger kids at home.
