The Charlotte Symphony Orchestra performs Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade, with Samuel Barber's Piano Concerto, conducted by Kwamé Ryan and featuring pianist Orion Weiss.
The Charlotte Symphony takes the stage at the Belk Theater on Friday, October 9, and Saturday, October 10, with Music Director Kwamé Ryan leading. It's part of the orchestra's Classical Series, and the program centers on Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade, a work that draws its imagery from One Thousand and One Nights—perilous seas, lavish palaces, and mythical tales. That lush, vivid sound sits alongside Samuel Barber's Piano Concerto, which has a cinematic quality to it, and Levi Taylor's One Foot After The Other.
Orion Weiss handles the piano for the Barber concerto, and the whole evening is conducted by Ryan. The pairing of Scheherazade and the Barber concerto puts two very different styles of orchestral writing on the same bill: the vivid, descriptive storytelling of the former and the sweeping, cinematic lines of the latter.
