Group visit to meet Santa in the decorated Nursery at Cardiff Castle, with a festive treasure hunt.
Visit Santa at the Castle runs at Cardiff Castle from 5 to 23 December, with slots between 10:00 and 16:00. It's a group visit, so you'll be heading in with other families rather than on your own. The main draw is meeting Santa in the decorated Nursery, and there's a festive treasure hunt to go with it, which should keep the smaller ones occupied while you're there.
If you've never spent much time inside the walls, it's a good excuse to actually do it. The Castle sits right in the centre of the city, surrounded by the shops and cafés of the city centre, but once you're in, there's nearly 2,000 years of history to pick through. You can see the Castle Apartments, the Norman Keep, and the remains of a first-century AD Roman fort. There are also the wartime air-raid shelters, the Firing Line military museum, and the Battlement Walks. The Victorian interiors date from the 1400s and were shaped by the 3rd Marquess of Bute and the architect William Burges.
Firing Line grew from a joint vision of 1st The Queen's Dragoon Guards and The Royal Welsh, and it commemorates more than 300 years of military history. Tucked beneath the south-east tower is a mural commissioned by Cardiff City Council in the 1980s, which depicts the Roman invasion and the conflict with the local Silures tribe. If you live or work in Cardiff, you're entitled to a free 'Key to the Castle', which gives free admission for three years.
