A night reimagining classic showtunes with live musicians and vocalists in the Cabaret, blending jazz, comedy and burlesque.
The Alternative Cabaret returns to the Wales Millennium Centre on Saturday 17 October, its third outing in the Cabaret. This time it's taking a deep dive into the darker corners of musical theatre, with the show billed as a British Postmodern Jukebox. The whole thing is built on genre-bending favourite hits and reimagining classic showtunes: a golden-age jazz kick-line becomes a solo cello piece, and a modern anthem gets a gritty ballad makeover, all backed by live musicians and powerhouse vocalists.
It's part of the wider Cabaret series at the centre, which they describe as bringing 'a taste of Soho to Cardiff Bay' — high-octane drag, comedy, burlesque, live bands and avant-garde gig theatre in an inclusive hub where 'everyone belongs'. If you've been to the other Cabaret nights, you'll know the vibe: it's a bit more late-night and loose than the main stages, and this musical theatre take fits right into that.
