Serena Terry: Therapy

Serena Terry brings her new show Therapy to the New Theatre on Wednesday 21 October, one of three UK dates on what she describes as her biggest stand-up tour to date. If the title sounds like a bit of a giveaway, it's because the whole thing is built around it: the last six months she's spent trying out 22 different types of therapy in an attempt to sort out her physical and mental health and quiet the chaos of being a busy mum on the cusp of turning 40. She'll be talking through the results — the ones that worked, the ones she calls bullshit on, and the way the whole search for some peace and quiet has left her husband and children regularly bewildered.

There's a bit of a story behind it, too. Terry is a comedian, author and the creator of the online sensation 'Mammy Banter'. She's sold out her previous two comedy tours across the UK and Ireland and, in 2024, became the first woman to sell out Belfast's SSE Arena. But after that, she went through depression, took a four-month hiatus and turned to therapy and self-care. She's returning to the stage still medicated, still peri-menopausal and, in her own words, still a little mentally unstable, ready to tell the room about her journey back and the life-altering things that happened in between.

So the set is built on that: the 22 different therapies she put to the test, the diverse and embarrassing outcomes she got from them, and the honest look at what actually helped and what didn't. It's a comedy show, but it's one that comes from a very specific place — the middle of a peri-menopausal crisis and the messy reality of trying to get your head straight while running a household.

Doors open at 18:30 and the show starts at 19:30 at the New Theatre on Park Place, Cardiff, CF10 3LN. It's one of three UK stops on the tour, so this is the Cardiff date.
