A live talk by renowned British classicist Mary Beard exploring the complex lives of those often left out of the history books and drawing connections to the modern world.
Mary Beard is coming to the New Theatre on Monday 19 October, her first time back in Cardiff since she was here in the spring promoting her book Talking Classics. It's a live talk, and she'll be speaking on the secret histories of ancient Rome.
If you're not familiar with her, Beard is a renowned British classicist who's spent her career making the ancient world feel a lot closer than it is. This talk takes you off the well-worn paths of emperors and battles and looks instead at the rich, complex lives of the people who usually get left out of the history books. It's less about the big names and more about the everyday people who lived and worked in Rome, the ones who rarely make it into the textbooks.
There's a modern thread running through it, too. Beard has spoken before about how Roman history can help make sense of today's political landscapes, and she says that connection sits at the heart of this show. So it's not just a trip back two thousand years; it's as much about the world we're living in now as it is about the one she's describing.
