Stand-up comedy show marking 40 years at the mic by Mark Thomas at the Sherman Theatre.
Mark Thomas is coming to the Sherman Theatre on Saturday 31 October, with the show starting at 8pm. He's billed as one of the oldest surviving alternative comics, and the night is a celebration of 40 years at the mic. If you've never come across him, that's a long stretch of stand-up to draw from.
Across those four decades, he's picked up eight awards for performing and four more for his human rights work. He's made six series of The Mark Thomas Comedy Product and three Dispatches for Channel 4, five series of Manifesto for Radio 4, and published six books and five play scripts. He's sued the police and won three times, curated and authored two art exhibitions with the artist Tracey Moberly, and holds a Guinness World Record for staging 20 protests in 24 hours.
There's a fair bit of the non-comedy side to that list, too. He walked 724km the length of the Israel Wall in the West Bank, set up a comedy club in Palestine with Dr Sam Beale, and campaigned for trade union recognition for cinema workers. Critics describe him as an intelligent, left-wing performer, and The Telegraph named him one of its Top 50 Funniest Comedians of the 21st Century.
