Immersive 3D time-lapse installation by ScanLAB Projects showing landscapes in flux, in Annwn Immersive.
ScanLAB Projects bring FRAMERATE: Pulse of the Earth to the Wales Millennium Centre on 27 October, their first show in Wales. It's a 3D time-lapse installation that runs as a 25-minute loop, and it's the first of two immersive experiences the venue is hosting this season, with Marshmallow Laser Feast's EVOLVER running alongside it.
The work is built from thousands of daily 3D scans of British landscapes, played across multiple screens to show the land in flux. You see patterns of growth, erosion, extraction and transformation, all carried by an original hypnotic soundtrack. It's not just for show, either: the data behind it has been published as scientific research in NATURE. The artists describe the result as art, meditation and science in concert, guided by architecture, theatre, music and mindfulness.
ScanLAB Projects is an artist-led studio founded in 2010 by Matt Shaw and William Trossell. Shaw studied at the Welsh School of Architecture, and he says the piece invites you to think beyond everyday timescales and to feel geological, seasonal and tidal rhythms rather than focusing solely on human ones. It's that shift in scale that gives the title its point: the 'frame rate' here isn't measured in seconds, but in the slow, deep time of the earth.
