A multi-award-winning show from the Edinburgh Fringe by Awkward Prods, combining drag, multimedia and audience interaction to explore the life of Princess Diana.
Diana The Untold and Untrue Story comes to the Wales Millennium Centre on Thursday 19 November, playing the Cabaret stage in Cardiff Bay. It's a multi-award-winning hit from the Edinburgh Fringe, put together by Awkward Prods — the same team behind Gwyneth Goes Skiing and The Fit Prince.
The premise is simple enough: it imagines Diana in heaven, where she tells the untold and untrue story of her extraordinary life. From there, it pulls in a fair few different threads: drag, multimedia, audience interaction, puppetry, and what the makers call a good deal of queer joy. It's the kind of show that doesn't stick to one lane, moving between the storytelling and the spectacle rather than just sitting in one or the other. After a sold-out run at the Edinburgh Fringe, it's toured the world, so this is one of its stops here in Cardiff.
It's playing at the Cabaret, the WMC's dedicated cabaret space, which bills itself as bringing a taste of Soho to Cardiff Bay. It's an inclusive hub for high-octane drag, comedy, burlesque, live bands and avant-garde gig theatre, and a firm fixture of the city's nightlife. Its artistic director, Graeme Farrow, describes it as a safe space where people find community and a home to be themselves — which fits the bill for a night built around drag and queer joy.
