A hands-on magic lantern workshop led by David Ellington and Faye Stewart from Spectroscope, where participants can make their own lantern slide.
David Ellington and Faye Stewart are leading a magic lantern workshop at Chapter on Saturday 7 November, part of the Deaf Gathering Cymru 2026. It's a hands-on session, and the main thing you'll come away with is your own lantern slide, something you make yourself during the workshop rather than just watching someone else do it.
If you're not familiar, a magic lantern is one of the earliest forms of image projection—basically a lamp and a lens that throws a hand-painted glass slide onto a wall. It's a slow, tactile way of working, and that's exactly what this is about: the process of making the slide itself. Ellington and Stewart are from Spectroscope, and they'll be guiding you through it, so you don't need to have done anything like this before to get stuck in.
It's also a BSL-accessible session, with British Sign Language available throughout. That makes it a good one if you're part of the Deaf community or just want to spend a morning working with people from across the city on something that's as much about making as it is about seeing. The whole thing is part of Deaf Gathering Cymru 2026, so it sits within a wider programme of events that weekend.
